API 5L PSL1 and PSL2 Differences for API 5L Line Pipe

API 5L line pipe of all grades have PSL1 and PSL2 two product specifications, they are different on chemical composition, manufacturing processes, mechanical strength, heat treatment, test records, traceability etc.
Line pipes in API 5L PSL2 is higher than PSL1

PSL is the short name of product standard level. The product standard level of line pipe have PSL1 and PSL2, also we could say the quality standard divided in PSL1 and PSL2. PSL2 is higher than PSL1, not only the inspection standard is different, also the chemical property, mechanical strength standards are different. So when place the order for the API 5L line pipe, there should be stated clearly for the size, grades these general specification, also have to clarify the production standard leve, PSL1 or PSL2.
PSL2 is more strictly than PSL1 on the chemical properties, tensile strength, non-destructive test, and impact test.

Different impact test methods for PSL1 and PSL2
API 5L PSL1 steel line pipe not required to do the impact test.
For API 5L PSL2 steel line pipe, except Grade X80, all the other grades of API 5L line pipe required the impact test at temperature of 0℃. The average value of Akv: longitudinal direction≥41J, tranverse direction≥27J.
For API 5L Grade X80 PSL2 line pipe, at 0℃ for all the size, impact test the Akv average value: longitudinal direction≥101J, tranverse direction≥68J.

Different hydraulic test for API 5L line pipe in PSL1 and PSL2
For API 5L PSL2 line pipe shall perform the hydraulic test for each single pipe, and in the API standard specification not permit to have Non-destructive test replace the hydraulic test, this also is a big difference between Chinese standard and API 5L standard. For PSL1 not required Non-destructive test, for PSL2 shall do the Non-destructive test for each single pipe.

Different chemical composition for API 5L line pipe in PSL1 and PSL2
Chemical composition and mechanical strength is also different between API 5L PSL1 line pipe and API 5L PSL2 line pipe. For the detailed specification as below. API 5L PSL2 have restrictions with the carbon equivalent content, where for the carbon mass fraction greater than 0.12%, and equal or less than 0.12%. Different CEQ shall be applied. What is The Meaning of API 5L Line Pipe?

General Information of API 5L Line Pipe:


Specifications for API 5L adhere to the International Organization for Standardization ISO 3183. The API 5L specification provides standards for pipe suitable for use in conveying gas, water, and oil in the natural gas and oil industries. The API SPEC 5L covers seamless and welded steel line pipe. It includes standard-weight and extra-strong threaded line pipe; and standard-weight plain-end, regular-weight plain-end, special plain-end, extra-strong plain-end, special plain-end, extra-strong plain-end pipe; as as well as bell and spigot and through-the-flow line(TFL) pipe.

Grades covered by this specification are A25 ,A ,B (and the following "X" Grades), X42, X46, X52, X56, X60, X65, X70, X80. The two digit number following the "X" indicates the Minimum Yield Strength (in 000's psi) of pipe produced to this grade.

Pipe manufactured to ASTM106 Grade A or B are not interchangeable with API 5L. Requirements to API 5L X grades are more stringent, rolled grades are not acceptable and rework is not allowed. Moreover, particular attention is given to toughness and toughness tests for sour services and higher pressure & temperature classes.

The Best Welding Way to Weld Steel Pipe

The best way to welding steel pipe:
First of all, cleaning the oil, paint, water, rust ect. on welded steel pipe,  then opening groove
according to the wall thickness , larger open on thick wall, smaller open on thin wall (grinder), then the gap on pipe, usually the diameter of the rod or wire is 1-1.5 times, if you do a mistake and largered the groove , then smaller the gap. Tack welding at least three points, four points better in general work.

When welding should be finish in half and half, the best start point should one centimeter higher than the lowest point which is good for connection.  If the pipe wall thickness, it should be layered, at least two layers, the first layer full circle after welding can weld the second layer.

Line Pipe Production Status in China

1. Production Process
Welded line pipe can be distinguished into three production process which are resistance welding, spiral submerged arc welding, longitudinal submerged arc welding. These three types of line pipe are applied in different fields according to the raw materials, molding, aperture size and quality varies. 


2. Straight seam electric resistance welded pipe (ERW Steel Pipe)

ERW steel pipe is a type of welded piep has widest range of applications, most production units (more than 2,000), highest production yield (about 80% of the total capacity of the steel pipe production quantity) and the earliest production line invested in China. In China, the production size of ERW steel pipe ranges from 20mm to 610mm which played a large role in the national economy construction. Since the 1980s, about 30 sets of the ERW steel pipe production units 219mm - 610mm units are imported from oversea advanced technology. After years of production pratice, the technology and equipment level have been achieve a great progress, and the product quality is improving. Because of the less improvement, quick wide range of applications and rapid development, in the future, the development of ERW steel pipe prodcution will  focus on producing low cost and reliable products. 


2. Spiral submerged arc welded pipes (SSAW steel pipe)

SSAW steel pipe requires less investment in equipment, low prices for raw materials to produce large diamter pipe, simple production process, low running costs. In China, the oil and gas transportation spiral welded pie has formed a steel plant-based oil system belongs basic format. Low residual stress and tube end forming machinery and expanding other advanced technology, strict quality control through the spiral welded pipe in the quality can be comparable with the Longitudinal. 


3. Longitudinal submerged arc welded pipe (LSAW steel pipe)

About the LSAW steel pipe production process, in the past we mainly use UOE technology. However, in the recent years progressive, JOCE technology is becoming the new mainstream technology for producing LSAW steel pipe. Compared with other welded pipe production process, the LSAW steel pipe production units require relatively large investment, higher cost of raw materials, more complex process, low productivity and high production cost. Because of the high pressure oil and gas pipeline requires large diameter 1 million tons every year. Regardless of the spiral welded pipe, LSAW steel pipe will complement the spiral welded pipe uncovered specifications.

Line Pipe

In modern society, line pipe is belong to low or ultra low carbon steel pipe with micro-alloyed. Line pipe is a type of high tech and high value added products which is all applied in the areas of metallurgy technology nearly 20 years of new achievements. The development trend of pipeline project is applying large diameter, high pressure, high cold and corrosive, thick wall line pipe. Therefore, in modern society, line pipe should have a high strength, low bauschinger effect, high toughness and resistance, brittle fracture, low carbon volume and good weldability properties. Meanwhile, line pipe has high resistance to HIC and anti-H2S corrosion features is necessary. The optimized production strategies is to improve the steel cleanliness and organizations uniformity, C≤0.09%, S≤0.005%, P≤0.01%, O≤0.002%, and to take micro-alloying, vacuum degassing + CaSi, the continuous casting process under light pressure, multi-stage thermomechanical rolling and accelerated cooling versatile batch process. Domestic and international pipeline specification does pipelines toughness index of steel, pipe only to specific requirements:

(1) Minimum temperature (-5 ℃) DWTT≥85% SA;

(2) the lowest temperature (-5 ℃) Charpy impact energy ≥145J.

Pipeline Technical conditions commonly used by the American Petroleum Institute standards APISpec5L, but the domestic user's specific projects or specific orders and technical conditions are often much more stringent than the API standard.

Smelting technology with more stringent requirements, technical difficulties focused on:

1) content of impurity elements control;
2) inclusion control;
3) a narrow composition control.

Line Pipe Consumption Report in China

Line Pipe is mainly used for manufacturing oil and gas transmission pipelines. Oil and gas pipelines is most convenient and safest lines connecting the resource area and the market consumption area. The construction of oil and gas transmission pipeline will not only ease the railway transportation pressure and also help to protect the security of supplying oil and gas to the market. Most importantly, it help to improve the energy security capacity in China. 

We also imported liquid natural gas (LNG) from Russia and the Central Asian Coutries. In order
to deliver these natural gas to the main consumption areas, construction the transmission pipeline is essential. Today, the West-East Pipeline Project has been completed, in the future, China will construct Shaanxi-Beijing, the Sino-Russian natural gas pipeline (East, West Line), as well as Central Asia or Russia to Shanghai Natural Gas Pipeline and the ultimate "West-East Pipeline. 

In China, the crude oil, natural gas pipeline network have already been finished in a considerable scale, however, the refined oil pipeline is relatively cover 40%. Therefore, in the future, China plans to build 30,000 km pipeline which requires API 5L X65 pipe line with the outer diameter of 500mm and wall thickness below 10mm. In the next ten year, China will construct about 50,000 km of oil and gas pipelines, the average annual need for line pipe is nearly 5,000km. The annual requirements for steel pipeline for transmission natural gas is about 400 million tons.

With the develpment of pressure liquid pipeline deliery, oil and gas transmission line pipe is corresponding to the rapid development of high grade direction. In the internatioanl developed countries, API 5L X52 line pipe is widely used in 1960s, API 5L X60-X65 line pipe is commonly used for oil and gas transmission. However, in recent years, API 5L X70 line pipe is occupied th main market for oil and gas pipeline construction. In China, the most widely used line pipe is API 5L X52, X65, X70 line pipe with the outer diameter ranges from 1016mm to 1219mm, and the pressure rate is 10MPa.

Line Pipe is widely used for petroleum and natural gas industry pipeline transportation systems, but this API 5L Line Pipe criterion is not suitable for the cast iron pipe. PSL is the abbreviation
of Product Specification Level which is the quality level of API 5L Line Pipe. API 5L Line Pipe has two standards which are PSL1 and PSL2. Although these two standard only have one word
difference, the content is very different. 
PSL2 is a higher quality level than PSL1. Both standard level have different levels of inspection requirements, chemical composition requirements,
mechanical properties requirements, 
mechanical properties requirements. When making order follow the API 5L Line Pipe Standard, the purchaser need to indicate the level of standard
(PSL1 or PSL2) regard of the basic 
contract terms such as product specification, steel grades, order quantity etc. In general condition, if the contracts do not mention the standard level,
the manufacturer will produce in 
accordance with the standard of PSL1. To be more specify, the differences are including:
        1. Pipeline Hydro-static Test should be done piece by piece, and the API 5L Line Pipe Standard does not specify to allow non-destructive alternative hydro-static testing.
        2. Impact performance test is necessary for PSL2 standard, while PSL1 is not necessary for this type of test.         3. Non-destructive Test should be applied for PSL 2 standard pipe piece by piece, while for PSL1 standard is not required. 
API 5L Line Pipe Standard is similar to the Chinese Standard GB/T9711. API 5L Line Pipe PSL1 is equivalent to the GB/T9711.1. Compared with API 5L Line Pipe PLS1, API 5L Line Pipe
PSL2 standard level requires more impact energy experiments, so the production time and production cost for the manufacturers will increase. Besides, API 5L Line Pipe PSL2 standard
requires a higher quality level of raw materials for producing steel pipes, the raw materials ordering time will be longer than the PSL1 standard steel pipe raw materials. Moreover, in order
the reach the quality standard of PSL2 and also control the production cost of the factory, the manufacturer will set up a higher level of minimum order quantity for the purchasers. For
API 5L Line Pipe PSL2, some time purchasers will request for following NACE standard which means during the production the manufacturers have to add hardness and acid resistance test
for the pipes to reach a even higher quality level of steel pipes.

API 5L X60 Carbon Steel Pipe

API 5L X60 PSL 1 grade designations come from API Spec 5L Specification for Line Pipe. Stronger grades have the designation X followed by the specified minimum yield strength of the pipe steel, measured in kilopounds per square inch (abbreviated ksi). Standard Line Pipe has grade designation A and B. Application: gas, water and oil transportation in both oil and natural gas.
