Usage of Steel Pipe

Transport and Service: Heavy traffic can put high amounts of pressure on roadway foundations, but the high tensile strength of carbon pipe, in addition to its elasticity and its ductility, allow it to be used safely in transport and service projects. Carbon pipe distributors know the product works well for water mains under roadways because it’s highly resistant to shock and vibration. It also tends to react more evenly when put under various degrees of fluctuating water pressure. Additionally, it can be made much thinner than pipes made from other materials. This means that it has a greater carrying capacity. Plus, it’s cheaper than copper, and the durability of carbon pipe helps decrease costs needed for repairs or replacement.


Building Homes: Carbon pipe is safe and durable. It does not need to be treated with preservatives, pesticides or glue, so it can be safer to handle when working on a home project. It’s also non-combustible, so it’s a good option for fire mitigation, and it won’t rot like some other pipes–making it resistant to common (and costly) household pests like termites. How to Weld Steel Pipe

Welding pipes is one of the simplest and most durable ways to join piping together and steel pipes can simply be welded together with MIG (metal inert gas), TIG (tungsten inert gas or SMAW (stick metal arc) welding. Before welding two pipes together, avoid any gaps between the two pipes. While welding, take measures to ensure the continual alignment of the two pipes.

1. Align the two pipes and use clamps to hold them together, if necessary.


2. Fire your welding torch or strike your welding electrode on the steel to open an arc between the welding tool and pipes. Allow the torch to form a small welding puddle on the surface of the steel, called a tack weld.

3. Move the arc slightly and create another welding puddle elsewhere on the circumference of the pipes. Continue to move the arc and create more welding puddles until you have formed a series of tack welds at regular intervals along the circumference.

4. Move the welding tool thoroughly along the circumference of the pipes creating a welding puddle that extends fully around the circumference and connects the two pipes together.

5. Extinguish the arc and allow the welding puddle several minutes to dry.

What is Line Pipe
Line pipe is a type of pipe that is manufactured from high strength carbon steel. It is typically made according to metallurgical specifications that were developed by the American Petroleum Institute (API). Line pipe can be used to build pipelines that transport a variety of resources including natural gas, oil, petroleum, and water. This pipe is available in a variety of diameters ranging from 2 inches to 48 inches. Line pipe can include either seamless or welded carbon steel or stainless steel piping. Because line pipe needs to withstand high pressures, there are important tests done on line pipe to ensure it meets all of the requirements of steel chemistry, strength, toughness, and dimensional characteristics. Using line pipe that meets the set criteria will ensure safe and reliable pipeline service.The size and diameter of line pipe that is required for a pipeline can vary based on the amount of gas or liquid that a pipe is intended to carry as well as the pressures that a line pipe must withstand. For example, in most cases a mainline, the principal pipeline that delivers natural gas, will require line pipe that is around 16 to 48 inches in diameter.
